At Dental Devotion, our goal for each and every one of our patients is a beautiful, healthy smile. We know that taking proper care of your teeth and practicing good oral hygiene at home can help you maintain your optimal dental health, as well as prevent tartar build-up and periodontal or gum disease from developing.

It is always advised to see Dr.’s Movaghari and Urteaga and the hygienists at Dental Devotion of Arlington, VA for cleanings and oral examinations twice yearly. But your personal oral care starts by eating regular, balanced meals (low in sugar, high in fiber) and learning to correctly use your tooth brush and floss for maximum results.

On tooth brushing – It is advised that you brush your teeth at least twice a day (after meals and before going to bed at night). There are many tooth brushes available in the market. Dr.’s Movaghari and Urteaga always recommends an ADA-approved soft bristle brush and fluoride toothpaste. Learn to use your tooth brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and brush using small, circular motions. This technique ensures that you always maintain contact with the bristles on the gums. Remember that each tooth has an outer, inner, and top surface to be brushed. Use the tip of the brush to clean the inside of the front teeth. If you wish to eliminate bad breath, brush your tongue to remove odor-causing bacteria. Electric toothbrushes, such as those manufactured by Oral-B and Sonicare, are also highly recommended.

About flossing – Flossing once a day is the most effective way to clean in the deep recesses between your teeth and down under the gum line. Flossing regularly also helps to disrupt plaque from building up and damaging the teeth, gums, and bone structures.
You should only need 12-16 inches of dental floss to effectively floss all of your teeth. Wrap the ends of the floss around a finger on each hand, leaving about 2-4 inches between each finger. Gently guide the floss between teeth using a sawing motion, curve the floss around the base of each tooth (beneath the gum line), and gently move the floss up and down. If you have difficulty handling the floss, or if you are flossing your child’s teeth for them, floss holders are often recommended.

Note: After brushing or flossing, it is important to rinse your mouth with water.
