Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride Treatment

Although most American homes receive small amounts of fluoride from their food and water, it is not enough to help prevent tooth decay. Professional fluoride treatments in your dental office provide extra protection for your teeth and stand as one of the most effective agents against tooth decay in modern dentistry today. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring element that exists in combination with other elements as a fluoride compound and is found as a mineral in rock and soil.

The benefits of fluoride have been extolled for decades and are widely supported by health and professional organizations such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Topical fluoride works by seeping into the outer enamel surface of the teeth and strengthening them against decay. Topical fluoride is found in toothpaste, mouth rinses, and oral gels. Dr.’s Movaghari and Urteaga and the dental hygienists at Dental Devotion of Arlington, VA recommend that most all children receive a professional topical application of fluoride during regular dental check-ups (every 6 months). It is especially important to treat children that are cavity prone. Sometimes, systemic fluoride drops are recommended for infants and in tablet form for children up to thirteen years of age.

Note: It is important to monitor the amounts of fluoride a typical child ingests. A condition called fluorosis may occur if too much fluoride is consumed during teeth development and may lead to white spots on the teeth.

It is important to remember that fluoride treatments alone will not prevent tooth decay.  Dr.’s Movaghari and Urteaga and the hygienists at Dental Devotion recommend that all our patients brush at least twice a day, floss regularly, eat balanced meals that are low in sugar, and visit our Ballston – Arlington denstist office on a regular basis.
